FULL EPISODE TRANSCRIPTION: 5 Pinterest Hacks for Explosive Website Traffic Hey, Lolas! Oh my gosh, I JUST did the most incredible training for my Mastermind girls about Pinterest and watching their faces light up when they finally understood how simple Pinterest could be, It inspired me to just pull out the MOST important parts of that training and share with you my 5 favorite Pinterest Hacks! Let me tell you something about Pinterest that is gonna straight up BLOW YOUR MIND! When you go to my website stefaniegass.com and you dig into Google analytics, 78%… yes SEVENTY-EIGHT PERCENT… of my traffic for stefaniegass.com comes from Pinterest! INSANITY! Why is that insane? Let me tell you… Pinterest is somewhere that I’m not really hanging out on. Pinterest is somewhere that I “set it and forget it”. It's somewhere that we can spend less than 45 minutes a week on… maybe even less… but yet it is the residual marketing tool that everybody uses but not many people know how to market on. Let’s dive into this awesome topic! LET’S GO! Ok, let’s start with: Why Pinterest? Is Pinterest right for you and your business as a marketing tool? Here's the thing about Pinterest… people go on Pinterest and they pin a couple of things and are sporadic about it and wonder why this tool is not working for them. Let me tell you, Pinterest is a residual marketing platform. Let me give you an example, the pins for me personally that have gone viral and drive a ton of my traffic my way are from two to three years ago!Pinterest is the l o n g game… kind of like blogging! Once you set it up and using the proper keywords, filling out those descriptions properly, you have catchy graphics, it will return you dividends in the future! Here's another stat for you: 2/3 of Pinterest users are moms! You might have found your way here because you were listening to my show, The Mompreneur Mastermind Show, so like, hellllloooooo we make up 2/3 Pinterest traffic. Seriously, raise your hand if you use Pinterest… *This is me and every mom I know raising our hands* I am on Pinterest all the time… at least once a week! Whether I need a recipe idea, an organization idea, or I'm looking for a way to create a planner. Additionally, whatever I'm searching for I want to search for it visually. This brings me to the next stat: 62% of millennials prefer to search visually. Let me ask you this, do you like to learn by watching or by viewing? Pinterest essentially is a visual search engine! Amazing, right? Ok here's another one… high-income households are 2X more likely to use Pinterest! Sooooo… what does that mean? Well, it means if someone has a mid to high-level income and they are on Pinterest, what are they ready and willing to do ladies? SPEND MONEY! BUY STUFF! CONSUME! Seriously, all of this info is amazing! This brings me to the final statistic which will hopefully make you feel strongly about using Pinterest in your business… 48% of Pinterest browsers are shopping! I’m telling you, Pinterest is poised to make you BANK! After all of these downright mind-blowing stats, let me ask you, how many of you are not using Pinterest at all or NOT using it effectively or not seeing results from Pinterest or you aren't consistent with it? Is it you? Yeah… so, we are gonna change all of that! What I'm here to teach you guys today are what I believe are the 5 Pinterest hacks that are responsible for driving 78% of my website traffic! HACK #1: Make sure that you have GRAPHICS that are going to stand out from the hundreds of thousands of graphics that are already on Pinterest! When I started out, I had a bunch of graphics that had my face on it because they were branded to me. My graphics looked like this… A big ole’ picture of my face with “How to Make Money From Home” and it's got “Stefanie Gass” written on with my little gold swoosh and my Stefanie Gass lipstick red color. Whaa whaa whaaaaaa…. Any guesses on why what was not working for me? It’s Because nobody knows who I am! Unless you are someone like Barbara Corcoran or Rachel Hollis and you have a face that everyone knows, having your face on a pin probably will not work. Here's the weird part, you’re going to have to test it because you're not going to really know what works best right away. When I started to test graphics with really blatant flat laid graphics like a girl with her laptop in the background and then a HUGE bright vivid hot-pink square in front of it and it has a huge, vibrant title that says “Order of Operations for Mompreneurs: What to do and When.”. Amazingly enough, that style of graphic started to highly outperform my own branded graphics! What I learned is that you really have to test these graphics. So here’s what you need to do, when you create a graphic (I just use Canva because it’s free) I want you to use one of you and your branding and all the things that give you brand recognition and then use another one that's opposite of what you would normally do. Use your next graphic with a bright, vibrant, flat laid graphic and then throw them both up on Pinterest into the same boards given it a 30-day run. Over time you can dig into those analytics to see which one is performing better. For me, my strategy now is creating Pinterest pins that are super different from whatever else I'm seeing out there. My Pinterest graphics are super bright, vibrant, and they're title centered. The title is almost the entire pin! The title is extremely specific to the pain point, the descriptions, and the search keywords that my Lola's or my avatar will be searching for. If you’re new here, I call my avatar “Lola”. She's a Christian Mompreneur, she's got three kids, she's trying to start a soap business online, she s t r u g g l i n g and doesn't know what to do first or how to do it! She doesn't have the cash flow to invest a ton into her business but she’s trying to get things going online. She doesn't know about marketing online, and quite frankly, she's struggling with all. the. things. She needs to make money from this business so she can leave her full-time job!... Did I describe any of you right now? Yeah? Well, you’re my Lola! As I create these pins for “Lola”, I'm going to put myself in her shoes which brings me to hack #2! HACK #2: Focus on your Lola’s specific pain point. For example, let’s go back to that graphic I was explaining to you. “The Order of Operations for Mompreneurs”… that's what the graphic says and it’s written in big, juicy, vibrant letters and there's a hot pink square on that it's got a back-lay of a laptop. Right below that it says, “What to do When. Business Blueprint Made Simple”. Say you’re Lola (because you are!) and you’re on Pinterest and looking for “what to do first” or “business step-by-step” or “order of operations for online entrepreneur”. I want to make sure I am using those keywords inside of my description, my title, and my graphic… so when this graphic comes up for Lola, I want it to be in-her-face obvious what it is so that she'll click on it! I also need it to be visually appealing. I need her eye to be drawn to it more than anyone else’s pin. There are SO many pins on Pinterest that are focused on being pretty with muted colors, with white with some cream sprinkles with the words “How to Run Your Business” in the tiniest print… STOP THAT! NO, Lola is there to get results and she wants to see an in-your-face vibrant promise that is specific to what she is struggling with RIGHT NOW in her business! Do you feeeeel me, ladies? It’s also important to be super specific in the description of your pins as well. When you create a pin, you have an area for your title and your description. So, let's take the graphic of my pin that says, “Order of Operations for Mompreneurs: What to do When. Business Blueprint Made Simple”. When I create that Pinterest pin in the title, I'm going to have something super clear like “Order of operations for online entrepreneurs. Step by step instructions to creating your online business”. Then, the description is going to say something with different keywords that Lola might be searching for. For example, you might say: How to start your business. Online instructions for creating your presence, brand, service, or product online, and when to do what! It’s important to think about what Lola searching for but it’s equally important to think about when she lands on this pin, am I hitting the right triggers and pulling the right heartstrings to get her to click! Another part of this hack is that you have to focus on keywords. My Lola is probably searching for things like start a business online, make money online, work from home, how to be more productive, work from home mom, how to start a website, how to start a podcast, how to make money podcasting, how to link podcast, to start a blog, when to start a website, which website platform should I use, etc. Here’s some homework for you, get inside of your avatar. Go get a sheet of paper or open up your “fancy website system” that you use honaaaay and make a list of alllllll the things your avatar is Googling! Where is she in her business or her life? Make a list of at least 15 things your human is Googling right now! So now every time you go to create a pin, podcast, blog, or content of any kind, infuse those words those keyword phrases into your descriptions, titles, and pins. Ya feel me? HACK #3: Group Boards! So when you’re in Pinterest, you have your own boards that you create, right? You've got your folders that you set up on your profile page and you can categorize your pins and plug them into the folders. You want to make sure that your folders are titled really well using SEO. For example, my folders might be titled: How to start a podcast. Mompreneur resources. How to make money. How to monetize your online business. Monetization ideas. Make money from the Internet, etc. I try to think about what kind of folder would be enticing for Lola to click on and go from there. Did you know there’s another tier of board out there? Yep! Probably 70% of the people I speak to are not using this kind of board… Group Boards! A group board is a public board that lives on Pinterest where there can be several different collaborators. These collaborators come together and share pins that are the same niche. For example, there could be a group board called “Virtual assistant extraordinaire” or “Virtual assisting hacks and tips”. A group board can have 400 different people pinning on it that have to do with the VA space maybe they are virtual assistants, maybe they are virtual assistant coaches, maybe there are people that are looking for virtual assistance. Whatever it is, everybody is pinning in this one area of virtual assisting! Why is that so beneficial for you to be part of that? Say you're a VA or you have resources for VA’s because this board has already been created and all the work's been done and in your niche, there are people that are now following and subscribed to the board! When you go share something, you're already sharing to 2000 people, for example. Group boards are essentially giving you the chance at more visibility then if you were doing this all on your own. In a way, it kind of doubles your efforts! It's like doubling down on a bet. So, you can go it alone on your pin by itself and hope your descriptions are good, hope that your graphics are good, and then hope that somebody searches for that and stumbles upon you and wants to click… orrrrrr you can double down on your bet and say, “I'm going to do all those things and push it out to an audience of potentially thousands of people that is ready, willing, and niched down to what I do”. I mean, that’s just mind-blowingly easy, right? Right! HACK #4: Re-pinning. When you go on Instagram, for example, when you post only the people that are logged in, are active, engaging with you and the algorithm says can see it can see your post! I mean that's like 5-15% of your followers maybe? The point is, that one post is reaching a really low percentage of your followers. BUT, what if every day you posted that post again and again and again…. and again… well gosh, now you have the chance of reaching 30-40% of your followers over the course of a couple of weeks. That’s exactly what we want to happen on Pinterest! This is called re-pining! It is something at just takes time. It will take you remembering, “hey that pin I did about the order of operations for mompreneurs, I pinned it 2 weeks ago so I should re pin it again so that it's fresh in the minds of my people on the group or is it gets bumped to the top!”. I know this sounds a little intensive, but I have a trick for you… a tool really… it’s called Tailwind! Tailwind is a small investment in your business. I think my plan is $10 a month. When you use Tailwind, you can set it up so that you have a whole list of group and private boards or personal boards, and Tailwind will share it to all of these different boards! You can even set up this automation loop where it will re-share your pins for you over and over and over again! It's AMAZING!! You guys know, anytime I can automate a system I'm going to do it! This is the tool that you can use to automate Pinterest! If you guys want to try it you can get a free trial through my affiliate link it's bit.ly/stefstailwindlink and try it free for 30 days and see what you think! I would not run my Pinterest business without it! As I had mentioned earlier, if I'm getting 78% of my website traffic, literally thousands and sometimes 10s of thousands of people every month to my website from this one tool, if I can automate the re-pinning process to me that's really priceless! Plus, it's very inexpensive! The re-pinning is a great strategy and you guys don't want to spend any money. You can do all these things for free, you just have to plan it in. If you need to do them for free, block out an hour a week to create your graphics, pin your stuff to all the different boards, do group board research, and then another 30 minutes to re-pin. Go back in and see which pins are doing the best (which I'm going to talk about in our last hack!) and then re-pin those. You don’t really need to re-pin stuff that's not performing. HACK #5: Analytics – Digging into what pins are working and why! Inside of your Pinterest business account (which I'll talk about more in a minute), you can find out which pins are reallyperforming! I like to look at like a 90 day or even a six-month span of time inside of Pinterest analytics and pull up which pins are doing the best. For example, if you were to look at my account over the last 90 days, I have 4 pins that are performing extremely well and they're all in the space of podcasting. No surprise there because, hello!... I’m a podcast coach. I have the podcast course one, of my big initiatives is to drive traffic to my podcasting episodes on the show, my podcasting blogs get people to opt-in for the podcast checklist, and to take my podcasting course. I have some pins that are doing really well that say in big lettering, “Is podcasting right for you?” Seriously, the title is huge. Then it says, “This quick quiz will help you decide if you should start a podcast!” and then there's a little banner across the top that says, “Take the quiz!”. It's a vibrant blue and it has a microphone as a little graphic. The next pin that I have is titled, “Why you need a podcast in 2020!”. It’s in huge, bright pink letting and then says, “The exact secrets to creating and monetizing a top-ranked podcast!”. So what might someone be searching for when they come across my pins? How to podcast. Do I need a podcast? How to create a podcast? How do I monetize a podcast? How do I launch a top-ranked podcast? All of those terms are embedded into my pins. The next pin is, “Podcasting strategy session, naming tabling, SEO, content map, and more!” this text is very dark an overlay of gold and it has a microphone, but the title is at least 75% of the pin! The next pin example is, “Why starting a podcast will grow your online brand and make you more money.”. This pin is a coral color, super bright, huge title, microphone back lay. Did you notice something? NONE of these have my face on them!! It’s kinda weird that they don’t have a human on them because some of the research you'll find will say that “your pin should have a face and it should be looking to the left and a woman's face will perform better!”, but here's the thing, you don't know what your Lola or your avatar wants and needs until you test it! Honestly, I would not have known that these four pins that are very different from each other with different colors and fonts would perform so well! What I want to do is now take these four pins and create templates out of them and just change them ever so slightly. I want to continue to use the pins that are working for me, but just tweak them a little. Another part of this analytic hack is understanding which folders are performing the best. If I have a board that's doing really well, I should be re-pinning to that board. If I have a board that's not returning any clicks/engagements/saves/impressions maybe think about renaming the board because maybe the board's name is kind of vague. When I started Pinterest, I did not understand the art of board naming so they were named something silly like “Inspiration”. Well… OK, but inspiration for who? What type of inspiration? So, I might rename that board “Inspiration memes for female entrepreneurs” or “Inspiration graphics for mompreneurs”. Make it bigger, juicier, and more specific to who you want to click! OK so here we go the five hacks I've just shared with you are: Graphics -- graphics that get clicked, graphics that are different, graphics that stand out, testing graphics. Descriptions and specific pain points embedded in each pin that utilizes those keywords and phrases that your avatar is searching for along with your homework to do that exercise. Group Boards – we will talk more about that in a second. Re-pinning – make sure you’re staying relevant and in front of mind. Analytics -- do more of what's working both with your pin templates, layouts, and graphics along with understanding what boards and folders that are working for you. So, if you're like, “Oh my gosh I love all of these hacks!” and you're ready to go…. then shoot, go on with yo’ bad self sister! Go! Go! Go! Pin! Pin! Pin! Let’s have a Pinterest mania! What better time than now? Like here we all are, if you're listening to this episode in the first half of 2020, we are living in the craziest time! Like seriously, none of us have seen this in our lifetime our parents or grandparents have never seen life like the coronavirus/COVID-19 situation. We’re in isolation and most of us are in quarantine or have stay at home orders. So, what better time than now to get the back office stuff done like Pinterest? Take this time to streamline the stuff that can grow your brand and your business over time. We all have more time and space right now because we're home! We're not carpooling, we're not at sports events, we don't have plans with our friends. Sure, it’s sad but it's also a blessing in disguise because when you have more time and space to do the back-end stuff, it's going to pay off for you in the long term. The best thing I ever did was fumble around and get Pinterest going before I knew what I was doing! The pins that went viral are pins that I just threw together.
