Enter, "I have a great business idea!" the juices start flowing, you are inspired, excited, and ready to cash in on your million dollar idea. You start Googling and all of the sudden you find yourself crazy overwhelmed with options. Different programs, courses, coaches all promising to help you gain traction and quick success. First thing you click? The pricing options... Before you know it you're looking at hundreds of dollars in overhead, before your big idea even gets going. Enter, "Um, no. Maybe I'll do this next year."
This was one of my biggest hangups as a new coach / educator. Which programs were actually necessary and which ones should I invest in first? I will break it down for you in today's show. What you need in the beginning and where you can save your hard-earned money. I hope this helps clarify for you so you can leap on that amazing business.

This is episode number 44, and we're going to be breaking down what the heck to invest in first as a growing or new brand or business, because I know that I get this question all the time, especially when women are taking my passionately profitable or funnel fusion courses. They're like, which one do I invest in? There's so many levels to creating funnels and email systems and webinars, and my brain is exploding. So I decided to take that question and break it down for you on what the heck to invest in first. And before we do, I'm going to disclaimer this show with the fact that we are having another snow day and hiding in my office, but I have both my five-year-old home and my two year old who's napping. The five-year-old has been doing activities all day long. And so I've given him the screen time Dundon done for this recording. So we're just going to cross our fingers.
Hope to get through this. I was joking on my Instagram stories that I woke up and I had two brand new pimples and I named them judge and Judy, because we're going to band together and get through this snow day with the kids. And yesterday was a holiday. So it was like double whammy hanging out with my own children, which is such a blessing, but also y'all know. It's like real, like hashtag save the moms. I was telling my husband, I don't know how many times these children can say the word mom in like a 10 minute span. It's like, mom, mom, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mama, mom. Like how many of you can relate? And I'm pretty sure that's where my pimples came from from stress. So we have judge Judy with us today, as well as co-host Hugo, but let's dig into the episode.
I know you guys are going to absolutely love today's content. So let's first talk about how to figure out what you need to invest in first and what is most important. People will hold off on creating a brand new umbrella brand or even creating a business in general, because they're so overwhelmed with the number of things they think they need to invest in. And I do have kind of like a beef to pick with the coaching industry, because I think so often you are being told that you need 10 different programs in order to be successful. But in reality, it's not the programs that make you successful. At first, it's about generating a following and it's about building trust. You've heard me talk about this, like every single episode and putting content out there to your avatar or to your perfect client, your perfect customer, that's going to set you up for success later.
So the very first goal as a new brand or business is to build a following and drive engagement, right? It's to start positioning yourself as an expert in your area or to get noticed. So I think that you can really start out a minimal investment and I would rather see you start with barely anything, you know, with the tiny investments in your business than wait until you have all the systems in place. You have the thousands of dollars to do all the fancy programs. Now I'm going to launch my business. Absolutely not. Why not start your business with a few minimal things and just some tactics of getting out there and practicing and putting some value into the marketplace and grow while you create more income that you can then invest in yourself over time. Yeah. So these are just my opinions on what you should start with as a success coach.
And I have worked with everyone. Y'all everyone from top 1% network marketers to other coaches, to bloggers, to dad, preneurs recently to people in photography, brick, and mortar businesses. So I believe that these investments should be first and foremost for anyone really across the board, doesn't matter what you do. All right. Now, I also think that you have to kind of inventory where you are personally, and then take my advice and tailor it for yourself. So, first of all, why should you invest in your business at all? You know, can't you just show up on Facebook, live and rock and roll, you know? Yeah, sure. You absolutely can. But when I'm thinking about working with someone or buying someone's products, there's a couple of things that I take into account. First of all, the likability of this person. Yes. So this is where sure. Facebook live Instagram stories, your feeds, your, your presence on all the free stuff.
It does absolutely matter because how much do I like you really at the bottom line here? It's it's are you likable? Do you relate with me? Are you, you know, a real human being on the other side of that screen could do. I think I could work with you. So first of all, yes, the free presence matters, but why should you invest? Because there is a level of professionalism that comes with having a brand, having branding done, having a website, having somewhere to funnel people into having an email. Like there's an email, that's not, you know, at Yahoo or at AOL, like I actually still have an AOL email. You guys it's so funny. It's like, so embarrassing people, like, what's your email? I'm like AOL. I now have a business one, but I also have an AOL that I actually still use, like for personal stuff.
So I'm stuck in the eighties. So don't be like me. Okay. I mean, there's a level of professionalism that comes with investing in your business. It's a tax write-off. So why not invest in your business? Because you can now can apply those business events, Smiths your startup costs your relevant expenses and reduce the amount that you're going to pay into taxes. Okay. And so that's really a huge win. You can also grow your brand and your business when you invest in it. There was only so far that we can go doing it all for free. And believe me, I tried, like when I first got started in anything, I was always looking at what's my free option. You know, I just need to get started. And it was fine. It worked out super well for me because I was able to grow so professionally at the same time, time as growing financially, right?
I think that you can get started with inexpensive options and scale. As you have success, you don't need to go bankrupt with all the fancy stuff until you need it. Why else did you invest? Because your time is money. I would rather have more time. Freedom, then more money spending time one-on-one with people or working 60 hours a week. Like I used to incorporate or showing up for call after call after webinar, after webinar. So you can invest in, in systems that will automate your process. And that it's important because when you automate your process, you have more. And then lastly, you know, why invest? Because you can scale there. Point when you will say, I'm ready for the next level in this thing. Like I'm having some success, but I'm, I'm ready to add courses or I'm ready to outsource or hire people and investing in your business will allow you to scale whatever it is that you're doing today and make it bigger and more profitable and create more time for you as the CEO leader and president most likely have your own brand or business to think big picture and to create, instead of being stuck in the day-to-day stuff like email, like invoicing, like, you know, figuring out how to send an email, like there's people that help you with this, but that's not what you need today.
That's not what you need today. So let's talk about what you need, in my opinion, opinion, when you're just getting started, what do you invest in first? Number one, you've got to be clear before you go and you start crying a whole new business, an entirely new brand. Let's say you're a network marketer and you want to become a coach. Let's say you're a coach and you want to create online products. Now let's say that you're a fitness expert and you're ready to go and do online personal training or start a membership group. And you think that you've got it. You think you're, but you're not sure what should I do? I'm not too sure. What should I call it? What's the tagline. What's the product lineup. What's the strategy. Very first thing you should do is get clear. And I believe that that means meeting with a coach or in mentor or taking a self study program I've seen over and over again, where people jump into a new brand or new business and a year down the road.
They're like that wasn't right. It wasn't it, which is fine because everything's a growth opportunity, but they could have saved themselves. All of that learning curve by just sitting down with someone and looking across the screen or looking into this self study course and having some self realization on what are my true passions, what am I gifted in? What makes the most sense when it comes to building products? How should I create the product roadmap? So if you're not clear, extra clear, I believe the first investment is a coach or mentor or self study program to do that. And if it's me fabulous, if it's not me cool, like you've got to choose somebody that you can a hundred percent resonate with and that you think is the right match for you. Okay. So that's number one. Number two. What is the next thing you should invest in?
Okay. You have decided, I'm now clear. You know, let's say I spent 250 bucks and I met with a coach or mentor or a nine $97 course. And I feel like I'm ready to go. The next thing you need to invest in is your branding and your website. This is the second thing. Why do I think that everyone needs a website? Everyone, even if you are a network marketer and like, that's all you do, even if you are just a mama and not just a mama, like, Ooh, she's a mama, but you're ready to create a brand or a blog around being a mama. Okay. Like, let's say, you know, you're, you're a mama and you're going to create this incredibly Epic brand around, you know, cooking. I don't know. So you still need a website. You still must have a website. Why? Because your website is your window to the world.
Your website is something that you own. Your website is something that you can control. We can't control. And we do not own Instagram or a Facebook page. We don't even own Pinterest. So if I'm going to drive traffic somewhere, I don't want to drive people to my Instagram page, where I literally have no control over the process and they're going to get distracted and they're going to end up in their DMS and scrolling. No, I want to funnel traffic to a website where I now control the visitor experience. There's a home page where I'm going to capture their attention with incredibly, you know, my incredible branding, which is piece of step one. You need to get branded. And if you need help setting up a brand, just email me with graphic designer in the subject line, I have an amazing, amazing contact. She's very affordable and she will set up your branding for you, including your logo, your colors, your Instagram memes, all of those things.
And it's professional and beautiful, and your colors are done and you're ready to go. And you can then build your website using your branding. You can also do your own branding on CAMBA, if you are graphic list savvy honeyboo. So then when you create your website, you've got beautiful branding. You're going to bring the user in. You have control. They're going to go and read about me. Then you're going to take them. And you're going to move them over to your next page, which may be has your blogs or your blogs or your free content, where they can learn about you, where you can give them free gifts, free trainings, free opt-ins, it's a hundred percent your own funnel that you're building. And the website is like the cheapest investment that you'll ever make in something that is a hundred percent yours. And it builds the user experience.
And it gets people to know like, and trust you. And also this is the perfect place for you to start capturing your new followers with an email list using forms or popups or call to actions within your blog posts and things like that. So this is the very first thing I would invest in. Get the website done. Even if you have nothing to sell that's okay. Start the website because you can build it as you grow. I started a website back in like 2015, I think. And I was actually going to just do lifestyle blogging. And so started this website. Thankfully, I just titled it Stephanie gas.com. That's why branding is important to strategize that with a coach or mentor, and it's evolved, you know, I update it every six months and it's just something that grows with me. You can use something. If you're pretty technically savvy, you can use something like WordPress with Squarespace.
You can do a drag and drop, which is what I opted for. And I know that this is controversial, but I'm obsessed with Weebly. I love it because I didn't want to spend time coding and doing all this fancy stuff. Like I wanted to drag and drop professional gorgeous website that I could build myself for like $150 a year or less. So I went with Weebly. I'm very happy with them. I've been with them for years. Start there. Number three third investment that I believe you must have, even if you're just getting started is an email capture system. I started with MailChimp because it's free and it was great. It was totally wonderful to get started with. And I believe it's free up to like five, 5,000 subscribers. Now, maybe it's 1500. I don't remember, but you can really build for a long time for free. And we believe that I even added in a landing page builder, which is great. So at least start there, start there. So at this point I have invested in a coach or mentor just to get your strategy straightened out. You now have your website, which is like 10 bucks a month, max.
And then you can get started with the free email system. So you're spending 10 bucks a month on your business. I mean, wow, that's amazing right now, if you're ready to kind of grow so a little bit faster or bigger as a beginning brand or business, the next thing that you need would be a landing page software. And what does this mean? This is a place where if someone wants to often to your email funnel, or let's say they're at your website and you're a mama and you're going to start with cooking blog. Okay. I don't know, like crumpets and kids got to think I'm a feat crumpets and kids. I don't know. And you have this awesome new blog, right? Well, Oh my gosh. You've got to have, I've not got to, but I would recommend having a landing page where if your call to action in your form says, Hey, Hey mama, want to find out my top five crumpets?
Like you got to my free krumpit guide. You know, my free crumpet cookbook. I don't know. Oh my gosh, I'm so reaching right now. You guys get what I'm saying? So when she clicks on, on that button, it can take them to a landing page where it has more information about the crumpets cookbook and why they need it and all of the amazing value there. And so landing pages are wonderful. You can also use a landing page elders for products like yeah, down the road. If you have a little mini course or an ebook, you will want to have a landing page market, these products, and to capture people's interest and to give them more details and landing pages are great. You can create them right through your website or you can purchase landing page software. I started with lead pages and it was great.
I have a link for that and get response because I still think it's wonderful. I've since shifted. And my goal was to combine all of these systems. And so I choose GetResponse because they have my email list, my landing pages, my sales pages, my full automation of sending nurture series emails to people and also live webinar and CRM, customer relationship management. It's all in one place, which is get response. I don't think you have to start with that, but I think if you want to start with that, it's wonderful because you don't have to then transition later. And it's very inexpensive. I want to say it's $40 a month for all of that, which is I think phenomenal because if you remember, we're spending 10 bucks a month on our website and now 40 bucks a month on landing page, email automation, CRM, like that's crazy, right?
50 bucks a month. What? And so that's, I recommend them. There are so many options for setting up an email system and a lot of them have landing pages in them now. So I would just make sure that it has all of the capabilities that you think you're going to grow into in the next 12 months. And go there. Now the next one, the last thing I need believe that you might consider when you're just starting out, because it's so inexpensive and it literally saves you hours and hours and hours of time. Number five is to invest in automation systems for social media. Personally, I use only Poult for Instagram because it does everything for me.
Like real time. I, it doesn't send me push notifications, like, Hey posts. Now it just does it for me. It's incredible. So I invest in that and that's not expensive. I believe it's like $8 a month. And then I also have automation software for Facebook called post Cron. These are all of my resources and in the show notes, or you can do Facebook scheduling now within Facebook. So you've got to start scheduling things out to save yourself time. And then the last one here is tailwind, which is my scheduling software for Pinterest. And that's a couple of bucks a month as well, like five or seven or something around there. So all of these things I've just mentioned, if you were to just start there and say for 12 months, I'm going to focus on just growing this new brand or business. And I, you know, I'm just going to focus on the following, creating the customer base, growing a presence, pouring content into the marketplace.
These are the foundational investments that you need in my opinion. Okay. So you've got your coach, your mentor, just the initial strategy session to make sure 100% that you're on track. Then you've got your branding and your website. I don't believe that's negotiable because I think it's something you're always going to need as a brand or a business, and you're going to grow into it. So get that done and set up, especially when you have time, as you get more and more successful, you have less and less time. So setting up the simple foundational things right in the beginning is going to save your life later. Trust me, the next one is having an email system. Whether you start out for free with whether you go with get response, whether you choose something else, you still need one. And again, that's something else for me that is necessary because you own it 100%.
If you can pour into an email list and send them little love notes and pour them, send them content and share with them, Oh, I have a new video today. Or, Oh my gosh, I have a new this or that podcast episode, YouTube video, whatever it might be. Here's your three tips for this. You're going to nurture these people. And it takes people seven to like 15 times of seeing you before they trust you and love you enough to buy something from you. So an email system is the most incredible way to control this process. When you pair it with your website, you then have your landing pages and your automation systems are set up for social media. So you've created more time for yourself. You're running a full on online business for less than $100 a month. I think that that is fan flipping tastic.
Like that's amazing. And all of those things are tax write-offs. I'm not a tax advisor. So get with your tax guru, but honey, if we can write these things off, like that's incredible. So now let's talk to the advanced people a little bit more advanced. You've got a business maybe up and running. You're ready to start marketing an e-book or a course or a membership group, or you're a coach or whatever. And you're ready to kind of go next level a little bit. And you have things that you want to sell and market at this level, I would then invest in a place to host your online content. So if you're going to do courses, I would then invest in teachable, which is what I use. I am obsessed with teachable and you can get my pricing at it, my pricing for that at the resources tab or on the show notes.
And then the next thing would be a payment gateway. I use thrive cart and you guys I'm obsessed with thrive cart. It's amazing. And it's only a one-time fee, but you could also use something like click funnels, which is about a hundred dollars a month. And what those do. What's so wonderful about these payment gateways is that they take the payment process and they take the user from checkout to upsell or down sell. So like, if they're going to buy my ebook, I make say, Hey yo, before you go right now, if you want to add on the Facebook group framework or the Instagram success formula, you can do it for 40% off. And I can upsell people using thrive cart and they also have an affiliate program set up. So if someone wants to be an affiliate for me, they can do it through thrive cart.
So I love drive car. And I think that's a wonderful investment. Once you have products banned, you can get away hosting courses, kind of like, I don't know. I would say that I was like pretty ghetto superstar for a while there because I would put my courses up like on YouTube and then share them as unlisted videos through an email sequence. You could totally start there. You really can. It's better to just get it out there. But I quickly realized I needed to automate the process and that people weren't completing my courses as well as they would have if they had an entire dashboard dedicated to taking this course. And I knew that I was moving into this online space in a big way. And I was going to have a lot of courses. So I invested in teachable, which is roughly, I want to say 50 to a hundred dollars a month.
Something like that. You can also do where teachable takes a percentage of your course income, which is also cool, whatever you want to do there. But that is something. If you're going to be a course person, I would definitely recommend that would be the next step for you. Then last few things here as you grow, this is once you have, I would say you are at a profit in your business. The next things you might consider outsourcing getting a virtual assistant, outsourcing a graphic designer, potentially outsourcing your social media, maybe getting a publicist. If that's something, a brand publicist, a podcast, publicist, all of those things would be next. And you guys, this doesn't have to be expensive. People flip out. They're like, Oh my gosh, hire somebody like, Oh, it's not bad. You can use something like Fiverr. I outsource all my podcasts editing using fiber.
I've do some VA stuff through fiber. It's a great resource. And everything starts at five bucks. So you don't have an excuse there, outsource what you don't enjoy. What doesn't lift you up and light you up. Outsource it, especially the easy stuff that you're doing over and over the repetitious. I don't know, but you know where I'm going there. Like if you're doing it every time, like publishing a blog post and then sharing a Hare and sharing it there and uploading it here, that's something you can outsource to a VA or a virtual assistant down the road. The next one, investing in webinar platform technology. This is again, a little bit of a future strategy. I don't think that this is something you need when you're getting started. I think this is something you need. Once you're in profit mode in your business, and you want to scale your sales webinars is a fabulous way to grow your sales, but not live webinar because you guys can be doing that for free on Facebook.
I used Facebook live and I still do. I use my get response webinar for live webinars. I can use zoom. All of these things can be free, but once you scale and you want to have evergreen webinars that run on autopilot and they run continuously without you, and you want evergreen webinars to run and be selling. They're like, Hey, next live webinar starts in three minutes. People register. They get into the sales room. They think, you know, it has a live experience. There's a chat box. It shows you how many people are in the room. And it plays as if it's live, but it's actually not live. It's prerecorded. And it's so amazing. I use ever webinar for this through webinar jam. It's expensive. Not going to lie. I believe it's like 700 bucks a year or something, but Oh my gosh. Talk about automating your process.
So that's somewhere that you can go towards. You do not need that today. The last two things investing in Facebook advertising, which is great. And it's investing in advertising period. It's Google clicks, Google ad words. You can use Pinterest advertising, Facebook ads, Instagram ads, Instagram stories, advertising. You can use influencers. You don't need that when you're getting started though, you can, but I didn't start out with Facebook ads. It's something that I grew into once my business was in a profit. And let's say, I mean, okay, I have a thousand more dollars in my business. Am I going to leave it in there? Or do I want to start reinvesting it in the business? At that point, maybe you start out with three or $5 a day and it's not necessarily, how much is this investment? It's what is the return on the investment? If you're going to put money into Facebook ads, great.
Just make sure you're making money from that decision. If you're going to outsource something great, just make sure time is money. And that you're going to spend that time in a more effective way that builds your business, that scales your business. So I don't think it's let me look at it. The cost of this. Oh, those evergreen webinars are way too expensive. Yeah, it is. It's expensive, but you know what? I don't have to show up on live webinars anymore. And if I can sell one product every time somebody gets on one of those webinars, I've paid for that whole entire platform in two days. Right? So return on investment. Is it going to be worth that investment the end of the day, are you going to make more money? Are you going to gain more followers? Are you going to create more time and space in your life for things that you love?
That's how you choose what you invest in. If you absolutely cannot afford to invest in something don't invest in it, don't do it. There's all always a free or more inexpensive workaround. In the meantime, when I got started in my coaching business, I had a website. I used YouTube unlisted videos for everything, and I had MailChimp. That's it guys. And I was totally able to get where I am today, you know, two years later. So you don't have to start out expensive and fancy, and don't ever let anybody tell you that their system is right, because I think any system can work when you're getting started. Now, the last thing, the last place that you can go and start investing in. There's so many things there. Go look at my resources page. If you want to see literally every single thing that I invest in because I put them all there.
And the ultimate step is to get full-time employees potentially, or to outsource things completely. Because the more that you can find valuable people to add to your team, the more time and space you create, but that's an ultimate goal and I'm not even there yet. Right? And I think that that would be something to consider as you scale. So there you go. That is my opinion on what you should invest in first. And I hope that helped you guys kind of go in chronological order of what's most important. What do I need to get started in my business? And I pray over you that you have clarity in whatever it is and wherever you are today, right now in your business. I pray that if there's something calling out to you, that the resources and financial means of peer for you to take that step.
I pray that the right mentors, coaches, friends, and inspirations are led to you right in front of you so that you can grab a hold of those people and those things and get the knowledge, the expertise and the motivation you need to go out and conquer your dreams. I pray that you would believe in yourself today and know that you have the most incredible potential within you. All you need to do is unleash it. Take a step and believe in yourself.
