Hey beautiful! Happy Mon-yay!
So, here's an interesting fact about me:
Roughly 4 years ago I found myself at the top 1% of a network marketing company. I mean imagine... walking across the stage in front of 20,000 people holding a life-sized $50,000 check. I had just gotten my second, (paid for) brand new SUV, and I was prepping to go to all out in Vegas for my 30th birthday the following month.
I remember walking the Vegas strip and getting a ding in my inbox that I had just received a payment for $17,000 that month. Holy crap I thought, I made it. I freaking did it.
All of the endless hours working leads, networking, setting up booths, showing up to party after party after party… Hours of trainings and motivational calls to a downline that had seem stagnant for so long seemed to have finally paid off.
That day we spent a few grand and had an epic VIP booth at the hottest pool club in town. My inflated self-worth (and ego) was at an all-time high. But as I look back on that girl, I realize 'success' and 'achievement' was wrapped up in a façade. False recognition, income that ended up not being sustainable, and a lifestyle that definitely was not fitting my moral compass.
Roughly 12 months later, things started to unravel. There was a new hot network marketing company on the scene (actually, quite a few of them) and my team started to disburse looking for the "overnight success" the industry loves to tout so hard. Customer retention was insanely tough with a premium product line, and frankly, I was working harder to keep my business from tanking than ever before.
With all my eggs in this one basket I had to make a choice. I came to a massive crossroad, and I decided that putting my family, my kids, my health, and my sanity on the back burner to being a slave to this business (that wasn’t fueling my soul) wasn’t gonna work for me, anymore. And I made some really hard choices.
Here we are, almost 4 years later and after personally coaching dozens of top earning network marketing professionals... my experiences along with theirs has led me to create this episode for you.
Now listen up boo, my story isn't your story.

Truly it helps the show that much. So I appreciate you. And let's move on to today's episode. This episode is brought to you by my best selling ebook, which is called the girl bosses handbook to attraction marketing. BU yeah, this book has already five value packed pages with strategies for how to become an attraction marketing boss. I walk you through what attraction marketing is, how you can use it in your business to focus on genuine relationship building. But most importantly, and I think what you really want to hear, how does sell more stuff? So for limited time, you can snag this handbook for only nine bucks, head on over to handbook, doc G R eight, the number eight.com and download your copy right now. All right, guys. So let's see you get into the topic which is network marketing, and here's the deal. As you all know, I was in network marketing full time professional for close to five years, I was able to build a well over six figure network marketing business.
I walked the stage, I got the big checks, the free trips can and put the BYOD and a cruise. I got a car that was fully paid for every month from this company. I had a considerable downline at times. I mean, there was a time where we had, I don't even know over 1400 people and it was awesome. It was super fun. At the time. It helped me to become who I am and helped me to discover. I had a passion for leading mentorship, helping people understand their own potential public speaking. It really did pave the way for coaching and for this podcast and for everything that I now am. However, network marketing can also be a really difficult industry because you're taught to market only one way. And you guys, I don't need any hate mail. So take all this with a grain of salt, but here's the thing, companies that run network marketing organizations, okay, what do they have on their mind?
What is the number one focus, profit, right? So as many distributors that they can put in the pipeline as possible that sell something before they quit, because we all know being part of the industry is that we have an insanely high insanely high turnover rate and people quit very, very often, very frequently. Gosh, you know, I feel like if I recruited three to five reps a month, maybe one of those reps was still standing 30, 60 days later. Okay. And those industry stats have not changed. So I do think network marketing is awesome. I think that you can definitely have success. I mean, I had a lot of success in network marketing, but I think you have to look at it as a supplement to your brand and whatever you're passionate about in your life and what God fuels you and calls you to do and speak about and teach about and educate about or to serve in some capacity that, is there a network marketing product that you believe in with 1000% of your soul then yes.
Market that product. Okay. Yes. If someone wants to market it with you awesome. But be honest about what it takes. And I think you also have to look at it as I don't own this product or this good or service. So I'm going to make a commission. And I almost tell people to look at it as an affiliate relationship. I'm an affiliate for blink right. Pay affiliate market, these products that I'm obsessed with. Yes. Awesome. Do that. That's great. However, here are the mistakes that I see and it's really not the distributors fault it's because these companies want to make money. And so they train you to market in this really weird way. You're probably going to just be nodding with me the whole episode. Like yes, yes. Why? So these companies tell you, you know, we're going to do fast start bonuses and you're going to do this and you're going to do that.
And you're going to bring advanced and you got to do it in 30 days. And so there's this really high level of pressure upon the new rep or anybody that's going to rank advanced. I'm really anyone in the industry. And why is that? Because they want you to go out while you're still excited before the fear sets in before the overwhelm, before the Oh crap, this is sales. And I can't do sales sets in and sell something before you quit. Truly. That is it. And you know, I have no filter. I know the industry inside and out. I work with top 1% network marketers all the time in my coaching business. And they're all the same. And there's nothing against these companies because some of them do really care about people and have really great products. It's the way they train in market. That really doesn't sit well with me.
So I'm going to debunk the way that they've trained you. And some of the things that you might be doing wrong that are actually setting you up for failure. As far as financial gain, making true money, being able to sell more products, bring more people into your pipeline, et cetera. So are you guys ready for this? Here are the five mistakes network marketers make and how to fix them. Number one is following the money and I am so guilty of this. You guys, in so long in my network marketing career, I was only focused on the money. I didn't see people as real people. This is really like, okay, here you go. Like, this is embarrassing, but my word for the year is authentic. So I can't tell any lies or fibs. So here's the truth. I looked at people and said, okay, if I get them in, Oh, that's a hundred dollars bonus.
And if I sell this, Ooh, that's a $40 commission. I was constantly focusing on the money. And when you're focused on how much you can make, you're not actually caring about people on the other end. And it became this way because I was having success. And financial success sometimes comes from the wrong reasons and it comes with the wrong strings attached to it. So for me, it was, Oh, how much money can I make? That's what success means. That's what defines me. So when you follow the money, you push people away. You don't have a lot of retention in your business because you're focused on the sale instead of the relationship. So here's the solution it's to, instead of following the money I'm going to sell, I'm going to upsell them, right? I'm going to sell them the biggest product I'm going to sell them the biggest package.
Oh, you know, if you buy the biggest package, you're going to have faster success guys. That's BS. And to me, that's really an ethical dilemma that is within the industry. I feel that instead of following the money, you need to follow the solutions, follow the solutions. This is your, the fix for this mistake. Instead of saying, I'm going to sell Bobby, Joe, the largest package possible in my business, because she's going to have a faster start. No, you're going to follow the solution. And you're going to care about Bobby, Joe. And you're gonna say, Bobby, Joe, where are you at in your life? You know, where are you at? Is this going to be a full-time focus for you? Are you truly passionate about the products? Or do you want to build a business? And you guys, this is not a one size fits all.
People are different. People have different passions. People have other jobs, people have things they balance for 90% of the distributors or the reps that you bring in. It's going to be a very part-time side hustle. And I believe that so many people quit because of the immense amount of pressure that is placed upon their shoulders. It's as if we expect them to go full time into the sales career within this direct sales company or this network marketing company. When in reality, you would be better off loving and nurturing people and offering them a solution for the things they really need to fix in their life. And then they wouldn't quit. It's so crazy, right? So you would say, okay, girl, what do you want out of this business? You know, if you want to just dabble and it's going to be part time, it's going to be 30 minutes a day.
You're going to talk about your products, testimonies. And you really don't have the goal of building a massive organization right now, focus on the solutions that she needs. Okay. Since she says, Hey, I just really want to market the products right now. You know, I'm not really interested in building this massive organization. Don't push things on her because of the financial gain for you, because what that's wrong, it's just wrong guys. And I know that it's been embedded into us by leadership by these companies, but really we have to focus on what's the solution that she needs. And that goes through the products too. If someone comes to me and they're like, Oh my gosh, I'm obsessed with your night cream. I love it. Instead of doing what I used to do, Oh, well, if you buy the entire package of all of the wellness products and this cream and this cream and this cream and on that, like you'll say 50%.
I'm like awesome girl. Like we do have some other products if you want to save, but I will hook you up the night cream. It's incredible. And I really focus on what problems she's facing, that my stuff can solve. And maybe it is only the night cream. But the beauty of that, you guys is that when you focus on something they need and don't push anything more upon them, they're going to be a customer for a much longer period of time. You're going, I've had some of my customers for six years with my network marketing business, because all I did was listen to what they really needed. And I didn't, you know, push stuff upon them that they weren't interested in. So focus on the solutions. What are the solutions you can offer people and listen to them. I think that's really the biggest takeaway here for this one is, listen.
I was constantly thinking about how can I upsell? What should I say next? What can I do to get them to sign the paper? I get it. I've been there. And I know that those things now I feel in my heart that the motivation for that was wrong. But at the time I really didn't. And so now when I'm looking back, I want to keep you from making those mistakes. And so what should I have done? I should have truly listened if I can sit down and really listen to somebody and hear them, what are the pain points? The, my stuff will solve. Is there a product that really does help this person feel better? Look better, et cetera that they can afford right now, if the answer is yes, then you should feel extremely confident about telling them about it. Okay. Number two, here's another mistake being pushy, weird and salesy.
How many messages can one human being received on Instagram and Facebook? That's like this. You guys ready? And if you're guilty of this, I am like, I was the queen of this. So believe you can fix it. I fixed it. Don't worry. It's like this. It's like, Hey stuff. What's up? Oh my gosh. Have you been looking for the most amazing luxury haircare ever? Or how about this one? Oh my gosh. Hi staff. I'm so excited to connect with you. Are you on a health and fitness journey too? I get that one. Like every single day or this one. This is the best one pay staff. Oh my gosh. Have you checked out this amazing health or CBD company? And like, they actually give me the link in the very first email.
Oh, good Lord. Have mercy on our souls. I did this all the time. You guys. And I got de-friended left and right. People who were defending me and like that should have been the biggest like aha moment, eye opener of this is the wrong way to sell and go about this. But I did not take a hint. I really did it. So I was really pushy and weird. I posted spam all over my Facebook wall. You know, buy this, buy that picture, blah, blah. Like if you think you're being salesy, you're being salesy. Like stop the madness. Okay. People, what do I do when people write me? Those messages, you guys, I don't even reply. And like, I coach these people, I should be replying like, Hey honey, there's like a better way to Mark it. But I just, it like, it's it grates upon me.
And like, I can't handle it. It's just so icky. It's so icky. And I hate being sold. And the crazy thing is, is that I'm a sales person. I can go out and I can sell the heck out of something. But it's because I truly am doing it in an authentic and genuine way. All right. So how do we not be pushy, salesy and weird. Here's how use attraction marketing and attraction marketing is listening. It's providing value and solution-based content around what it is that you're selling. It's using curiosity to drive conversations. All right. So attraction marketing. Here's an example of this. Let's say that you market makeup, you post a picture of your face and let's say you do half your face and makeup. And the other half of your face has nothing on it. And you're like, Oh my gosh, you guys, I had no idea that this pure makeup line could provide coverage like this.
You're going to get blown up with comments that are like, what makeup line is it? Holy smokes. That's amazing. Dah, dah, dah, dah versus, Hey, that's attraction marketing. You're calling in the people to post and to ask you questions versus pushing the products today. Only 20% off of this all natural makeup line. Like bam, bam, bam, bam. Right? Posting pictures of the bottles like you guys like boom. Yeah. Click no post about the solutions, the testimonies. What are the results? And then don't talk about what the product is called or where they can buy it. Why it forces people to ask you to comment, take it over into a DM, into a private message into email, into boys' text, take it away from the public forum. And you can start a true real conversation. So someone would comment on the makeup one, what is this?
You're like, Hey, Hey girl message. You send them a voice text. Hey, Mary, I saw that you commented on my makeup post. Isn't that crazy? Yeah. Like that's super crazy. What is it? Oh, it's this awesome new makeup I found. It's all natural. I loving it. It's really light coverage. Do you want me to send you some info? Yes. I would love some info on that makeup line. It's so cool. Yeah, for sure. Here's the link. If you buy it through my link specifically, you can get 20% off. So give them a reason to buy through you because people are always doing what shopping for the best price. And you don't want to lose them to Amazon. So urgency wins. So use attraction marketing. And you guys, if you haven't gotten my ebook, it's $9. If you are a network marketer, you need this book.
Okay. I don't even make a profit on this book. It's like nine bucks. Cost me more to advertise it on Facebook. Okay, go get the book. It has 11 strategies. Just like the one I laid out. It's at handbook dot G R eight. Number eight.com. All right. The next mistake that network marketers do or make is they try to move too fast. And this again is not your fault. This is not your fault. And those of you that are like top network marketers, don't play a hate on me. Cause I'm going to give the world the truth. In this episode, trying to move too fast. You sign up for this new network marketing company and they give you this plan, okay, we're going to move super fast. You're going to do this and do that and make the list. And you're going to get all of these product samples out and you're going to do this and you got to bring advanced and you're going to get an extra bonus.
And when you move too fast, you make mistakes as with anything. Okay? When you start a new business, any type of business, typically you will not turn a profit for two years or more. Whether you have a brick and mortar, whether you have a franchise, whether you start a blog, I don't care. Network marketing is no different. Instead of focusing on turning the quick buck, by pushing your products on people and forcing them to buy mom, grandma, sister, friend, brother, husband, like yo, I've been there. Okay. I rank advanced on my three family members that quit within two weeks. And why did it matter? Because when the public eye sees that, Oh, she's so successful. Look, she rank advanced, but in reality, they all quit. And I was starting over next month. Instead, I should have said, okay, this is going to be the long game for me.
I'm going to build this in a real way. I'm going to focus on value. I'm going to focus on teaching people, educating people on all natural skincare. I'm going to educate people on creating a base for their makeup. That will last all day. I'm going to educate people on the products that they're using on their skin and how that can potentially be harmful to their bodies or et cetera. I'm going to teach them stuff that I'm passionate about. And I'm going to casually mention a product that does this for them. I'm going to look at it as an affiliate. I'm then going to think about who are the people that actually might be passionate about these products as well. Are there makeup artists, are there, you know, estheticians, are there plastic surgery, offices? Like where are the sweet spots for me? Where I'm not forcing my grandma to sell skincare because let's get real.
Okay. But I'm going to think about the long game. And then I'm going to approach it as a normal person. Not as a creepy car salesman. Okay. No offense to my car salesman friends, but I recently bought a car. So I know what's up. So you guys are going to think about instead of, Oh my gosh, you have to sell this and dah, dah, dah, and I have to rank advanced. I'm going to get a bonus. Think about, Hey Lou, like I know you're a makeup artist. Do you already have a skincare line that you rep because I have something you might be interested in. It's new. It's all natural. You can make 30% commission from your clients, like be normal about it. Okay? And when you focus on the long game, what's the difference. People don't quit on you. You have a much higher customer retention.
You don't get on social media and people actually see you as an expert that genuinely cares. And as an authentic person, instead of someone that's just a sales person or just a network marketer, you do not want to come across this way. You guys it's icky and you're going to actually turn people away. I promise you. And when you have five years from now, when you look back at your organization and you say, I took the time to actually breed the real relationships and the real people that want to do this, and that have a natural, you know, inclination to market these things or to be passionate about the stuff that we sell. They're going to stick with you and they're going to be more successful. And your foundation is going to be just a thousand percent stronger than if you build it on a bunch of false purchases and a bunch of people that don't really want it.
Does that make sense? I hope that makes sense to you. Go slow to go big. That is your solution. Go slow and do it right to go big. All right. Number four, two more. Number four. The mistake solely marketing your products solely marketing your products. So what does this mean? This means you're showing up and all you're selling. This is similar to one we've talked about, but it's a little bit different. So your all you're focusing on is when you want to sell it, you're focusing on the product. Okay. You show up and you say today only, you know, buy the exclusive conditioner. It's black, Friday, 30% off. Like you're selling the product instead, sell yourself. So this one, I guess it's similar to number two, but it's marketing yourself. So here, I'm bringing you back to having an umbrella brand where you're actually marketing yourself.
This would be something like you guys like look at my hair today. Like it's so soft. I always struggled with split ends, but now I never really need a trim anymore because my hair is so healthy. And people are like, what are you using? That's crazy. And you can say all message. You take it offline. And instead of focusing on the product, you say, Hey girl, like, are you struggling with split ends or dry hair? Cause I mean, I used to become relatable to these people. They're real people, okay. It's not a sale. It's a human being. It's a person. And when they say, yes, I am, you can say, Oh my gosh, well today we have 30% off the conditioner that I used. Do you want to go ahead and get my link or get more info? And I always like to say, do you just want some more info?
Because it's so when you pressure people they're going to run. But if you offer it in the light way with a sense of urgency, like, Oh my gosh, today we have this thing. You want some info? Or, Oh my gosh, today you get to, you know, a free mini shampoo with your purchase, but do it offline after they've expressed interest, don't just blast the masses with your products because that's just kind of cool. Okay. Last one, number five, giving up on your prospects or distributors. This is a problem giving up on your prospects or leads and your distributors. So this is for those of you you're marketing in the right way. You've got these new leads in the bank. Okay. So let's say you did the heroin. She wrote you. She's like, yeah, I'm interested. You're like, cool. And you wait all day. You're like, Ooh, is Mary going to buy?
I'm going to check the back office, going to check it again, checking my email. She's not buying. Oh, I guess she wasn't interested next. Oh, guess I suck in network marketing. I'm going to quit guys. Here's the secret. Okay. People forget. I open an email every day that I forget to reply to. I opened a text every day that I forget to reply to. I am busy. I have kids, I run a business. I'm grocery shopping. I'm working out. And I hate seeing new messages that I like. I can't handle it. So I'll open it. And then I'll take a screenshot, like what a weirdo. And then I forget. So chances are your people are just forgetting. And I know I've put the fear of the fear of the fear inside of you about being weird and pushy. So here's the difference. You don't pop back in and go, Mary, have you purchased?
Or you can buy, Oh my God, you hop back in and you're casual. You need to be front of mind. What does that mean? Go to Mary's page. Like a couple of her posts, comments, something that has nothing to do with your products services, or that purchase that you're waiting for Mary to make, go over and be like on her latest picture. Oh my gosh, Mary, that looks fun. Like where are you guys at? Or, Oh my gosh, Mary, I love your shirt in this picture. You know, where did you get it? You want to be front of mind. Mary's going to then link, Oh, poop, you know, Stephanie, a purchase or a message every time this works for me guys. Well, like let's say eight out of 10 times. If I head over to their social media and I show them some love, they pop back into my inbox.
And they're like, I forgot about you stuff eight out of 10 times. So start there, go over there and be front of mind. Now it's okay to also ask them. Let's say the next day rolls around. And the promotion is still going hop back in and be casual and be like, Hey Mary, I'm just seeing if you had any other questions. Cause the promo is ending today. Like no pressure. If you want to buy it, no pressure. You know, either way. Like I always give people an out. If I give them an out, they'll actually reply to me versus Mary, the promotions ending tomorrow are you get an order like maybe Mary doesn't want to order anymore. And now you got weird and now she's going to go blacklist you and go like Mia. And then you can't find Mary. But if you say it in a really like, non-pushy way, Mary's going to be much more apt to reply.
So you can say something like, Hey, Mary, just want to let you know that promo is ending. Just no pressure. I just wanted to remind you how much more casual does that feel. And then Mary might be like, Oh, you know, I had this big expense come up. I really can't afford it. And you can say, cool. Do you want me to follow up with you the next time that there's a promotion, right? Like guys, it's just that simple. So don't give up on your prospects. And this also brings me to giving up on your distributors or your reps, whatever you guys call them. And so for that, what I mean by that is you came in, you brought this new person on your company is pressuring them to move fast. You probably are pressuring them to move fast because the company taught you that that's the right way to have success.
Yes. I know I've been there. I was there for five years. And so what happens that distributor freaks the heck out, Whoa, overload, I'm overwhelmed. This is too much pressure. I can't do this. I'm not going to be salesy, creepy and weird. So I'm going to hide. They go Mia, they quit talking to you. They might even quit truly. And how many of you have been there? Like I had, I had so many people that I brought into the business because they saw me telling them it's so easy on social media and they got in and they realize it's not easy. It's hard. Or this is freaky and I'm uncomfortable. And when people are uncomfortable, they don't want anything to do with that. So don't give up on them. Start over, just start over guys. Communication is life. So call them up. Be like, I just want to apologize if you felt pressured or overwhelmed, you know, that was my bad.
And I want to start over with you and I really want to ask you, what are your goals? Do you just want to get free products? Like we can do that in a really simple way. Let's use attraction marketing. Let me help you come up with some really easy posts that are going to create curiosity for you. Okay. Help them hold their hand or Hey girl, you know, what's your goal. I want to make 500 bucks a month in this company. Awesome. Let's start with a hundred dollars goal this month. Okay. And let's think about, do you know anybody that might love the products as much as you do or that I can help you get some samples out to I'll come over. We'll do a mailing party together. Like guys, people are afraid. It's not that they don't want to do this with you.
They don't want to be successful. It's that? They're afraid. It's overwhelming. It's scary. And quite frankly, this is sales being a network marketer or an affiliate is selling. So those of you freaking out about sales, go listen to my sales episode. Number 17, because I talk all about how to love sales. If you hate it, or if you're freaked out by it. Anyways, don't give up on your distributor. The bottom line is that they're probably just overwhelmed and maybe you are a piece of that puzzle. I know I was, and I wish I would have gone back and said, Hey, you know, I'm doing this the wrong way by forcing you to take action and move really fast and make mistakes. Let's look at this as a long haul together. Let's give this a year and let's do this in a way that feels good to you.
Maybe it's doing one simple post on social media using attraction marketing a month. That's okay. You guys stop forcing people to hit the pavement, call everyone they know, and to be creepy because that's going to make them quit. So the solution is to use, follow up, be front of mind, genuine, authentic, and actually care about the goals they have coming into the business. And never, never, never, never lie to people. Okay. Never lied to them. When they say, can I honestly make 500 bucks a month in this industry? You can, you can tell them, are you honestly willing to work really hard? Are you honestly willing to get out there and to sell and to market products? Are you honestly willing to get out of your comfort zone and maybe host some online parties with me, you know, head out, see what salons want to hold our hair care products or which dermatology offices want to market our skincare?
Like, are you willing to do those things? Because at the end of the day, people aren't exceptionally passionate about what they're doing, then it's not going to be a good fit. So go take the time, go slow to go big, take the time to really find the people that want to do this with you authentically want to, they have a plan passion in their heart to share the products that you market or the services. Okay. So network marketing can be an amazing way to create income, especially from home. There's no overhead. It's very easy to get started with the network marketing company. You can do it on your own terms. You can go as slow as fast as you want, if you do it right. And if you follow your heart instead of your head. So I don't listen to all of the, do this, do that, go fast, be pushy, be weird, listen to how can this help people?
What are the success stories I can share? What are the testimonies I can share? What is it about this product that makes it stand apart from every other product out there? And then how can I share this in this casual that doesn't come across as a slap in the face to my friends and family and followers. Okay. And then I also want you to ask yourself, am I extraordinarily passionate about what I market kidding? You must be extraordinarily passionate about it really. Or you must be extremely and been really passionate about your mission. And then these products fit in. Like, for example, let's say that you do raindrop massage therapy. Well, Oh my Lord. You've got to have an essential oil go with that. Yes. Or let's say that you're extraordinarily passionate about organic meal prepping. Well, Hey yeah. I bet you, there's a network marketing company that has some amazing organic supplements that you can put with your passion.
Do you guys see that? So just be honest with your heart and if you're not in alignment with the right company or the right products switch, this is your life. And I know that's hard and it's hard to hear, but you know what you live once. And so if is not fueling your soul and lighting you up every day on a daily basis, I challenge you to drop to your knees and ask for guidance. I really do. There is a call upon you and you have these gifts and just be sure that you are taking steps towards accomplishing the call in your heart. All right.
