PPU Live Q&A

Today, we are going to get juicy! Over at my Podcast Pro University group, my members asked some great questions, everything ranging from podcasting to your brand to monetizing and other various nuances of this business. Whether you are a podcaster or not, these questions can and will pertain to you! You are going to LOVE it!

Remember, if you want to be part of the Podcast Pro University committee, come on girl! We are waiting for you! Join the hundreds of women that are part of this committee and the dozens of women who are launching top 30…. Yes, you read that right… TOP 30 podcasts in their respective categories!! We’ve even had a couple of people hit “new and noteworthy” … this is just blowing my mind! With PPU, you get the community where women are doing amazing things for one another like podcast swaps, review swaps, and not to mention, an amazing community and sisterhood. For now, you can get such an amazing network of support and encouragement as well as lifetime access to Podcast Pro University which is the actual training that dives into the tactics of podcasting, naming your show, creating all of the content ideas, putting it into action, where to host on Google/Spotify/Alexa/all.the.places., how to edit, how to record, how to get guests on your show, how to manage the process from the backend, advanced growth strategies, monetizing…. ALL OF IT! Ladies, my course literally has everything that you need to create an amazing and profitable podcast that is going to build and scale your brand over time, set you up with success with SEO, and hello… you get to record from your home, in your PJ’s, drinking all the drinks, messy hair don’t care, braless and flawless…. CAN I GET AN AMEN!? Seriously though, come over and join us at podcastprouniversity.com!

Let’s dive into some of the fantabulous questions from our PPU sisters…

Do you listen to your podcast before you send it off to be edited? NO! I record my episodes and if I feel like I did well, I don’t even edit them! Now, this comes with time. Trust me, in the beginning, they all needed to be edited. Now, I can rip out an episode and I don’t need to worry about editing, which is awesome because it saves time and money! I do not listen before and I actually don’t even listen to the edited episode because ain’t nobody got time for that! RIGHT? Here’s what I will say, the more comfortable you get with your recording your episodes, just trust yourself! I would rather you save an hour of re-listening to your episode than worrying about catching every “um”, “and”, “you know” and long pause… remember that people are there to learn and get great information from you! Seriously, you are your own worst critic so just send the episode and don’t re-listen to it!

Do you have a podcast pitch acceptance rate? This question is pertaining to the pitches sent/pitches accepted schedules. How many should you send out per week? This is going to be SUPER varied based on the size and criteria of who you are pitching. When you think about pitch strategy and trying to get on someone else’s show, do you want to be on more shows with  smaller visibility to get your publicity going OR do you want to pitch big shows but do less? In the beginning, I was pitching small shows because I wanted to have a ton of visibility and get as much publicity as possible. I went after shows that were smaller than mine but really niched to my audience. I had about a 60-70% rate of “yeses” because when you’re podcast platform is bigger than theirs, they want you to come on and add their expertise because it is a benefit to them as well. The next strategy is that wanting to pitch BIGGER shows or hyper-niched to my audience, I will take it, but it is rare. There is a less “yes” rate when you are pitching big shows. It really comes down to your preferences. If you want to get on one show a week, perhaps try pitching 1-2 shows a week.

I started going live on Pod Bean and my podcast Instagram stories so that I could get used to doing it, but the second people get on to listen or watch, I’m a deer in headlights! You are not alone sister! Let me tell you my biggest secret for when I was going Live in the beginning… I would get a good ole’ fashioned sticky note and would put it over the number of viewers and tape it over the number of viewers on my phone or computer because it would totallythrow me off! I don’t know if Pod Bean has a way to “turn off” the number of viewers that you have, but if it doesn’t just get your sticky note and put it on top of the viewer number! Because really, does it matter? Do we care if anybody watches? No. We know for a FACT that replays are going to be more viewed than the Live itself because let’s face it, people want to watch stuff on their own terms. So who cares if someone watches you Live or watches you later? So, use that sticky note and YOU show up as if 100 people watching you all at once! However, this sticky note trick doesn’t hide the comments, so if people are commenting, you’ll know they are there. Just remember these people wouldn’t be watching you if they didn’t like you and weren’t a fan of who you are and the value you’re putting into the world. At this point, I personally don’t feel nervous or judged by any of you because you guys are my sisterhood, you’re my Lolas! I’m showing up to you with no make-up on, in my pj’s, with my crazy hair… I’m just here for it! Just remember, those people who are watching you Live are YOUR PEOPLE!

Podcast Interviewing: Do you discuss a topic beforehand or just talk and see what happens? Do you have a topic in mind? Yes! I do have a topic in mind before I interview. If I am not serving my audience to the highest capacity, I’m not doing them justice. I’m not going to take an interview just because someone is fancy! You guys would not believe how many pitches I get every week from people that are super fancy! These fancy pants people can show up with their charts and their billions of followers, but if they are not serving my audience or trying to change their life by discussing a topic that I’m unfamiliar with… I’m like, NEXT! Who cares how big they are? What value are they bringing to the tables of my listeners? But I digress, when it comes to interviews, I not only have topics in mind, but I have people in mind. When we discuss the details of the interview beforehand, I am letting them know what I want them to specifically talk about. I don’t give out questions beforehand because I want to be able to have the genuine ebb and flow of conversation while my guest is teaching about the topic. For example, the guest may be sharing their story and they may have a really cool talking point in their story, I want to be able to bridge off of that, rather than just strictly staying with the question.

I want to do coaching on my podcast. What do I need to do in order to cover myself in the way of a waiver? Disclaimer! I am NOT a lawyer and I am NOT qualified to teach you what to do in your own business… BUT, for my own business, I have a “coaching contract” that my clients have to sign off on before we meet. That is tier one of protection. The second thing that I do, I implement a content release for my podcast. Essentially, they are waiving any right to the recorded material as well as signing permission to use their coaching session in any way, shape, or form. You can find lots of great templates online! I would take the forms you find online and then have a lawyer take a look at it to make sure it covers you.

What is your set up as you do a coaching session? Is there a way that I can start doing this without having a website, Thrivecart, or a Calendly? You can totally start it up for free. Set up a Google form and once you’ve booked their interview or their coaching session, you just send them to the google form! They can fill out all the things like their name, phone number, email, and even their enneagram number so I really know about them and their specific personality type. I will also ask them, “what are you top 2 things you want to go over in this coaching session that MUST get covered today?”, ask them to tell you about their business and anything else that they might want you to know. However, what you personally ask for in your coaching sessions needs to be catered to what you coach specifically. Google forms are free and that’s absolutely a service that you can use. I personally choose to use Calendly which I use to schedule all of my interviews and clients. There is a form that all of your potential clients need to fill out and submit with all their information right there inside the Calendly platform. Another reason why I personally love Calendly, with their paid plan which is $8-10 a month, it automatically sets up the Zoom calendar for both of us and sets up reminders!

How often is it ok to repurpose podcast interviews where I was the guest and I repurpose that interview for my show? I think you can repurpose any podcast that you do for someone else that is new and unique content. A lot of the times when I do a podcast interview, it’s a lot of the same stuff: I share my story, I share about how women can find their God-led calling, and/or passive income. Well, on my own show, we’ve already beat that like a dead horse so I wouldn’t use that kind of content on my personal podcast. However, I have some very unique interviews out there! P.S. I am OBSESSED when people interview me in a new and unique way, and they ask me things that I’ve never been asked! That is something great to keep in mind when interviewing guests. How can you be different? How can you explore a topic in an exclusive way and go deeper into the subject matter with your interviewees than what they are used to? That interviewing technique really stands out and the probability of them using that interview on their own show is much higher. For me, I really ask myself, “Was this interview new, unique, or different?”. If the answer is, YES, then I ask them if I can use it on my show. Then, we sign a release and I’m able to use that content/interview for my show. So really, to answer this question, you can do it as much as you want as long as you’re putting out new and unique content because you’re now repurposing your time! Time is money! What’s really cool is that this blog post came from a Live Q&A session that I ended up recording and now, it’s available to me for many different purposed. Any time you’re teaching, you need to think, “how can I repurpose this?”.

Can you have a podcast that is more focused on your journey through life, rather the niche being “mompreneur” or “marketing”? Sure! For example, your niche can be experiencing miracles. Say you experience miracles and you want to talk about other people who experience miracles and they are going to share their story. So, you are going to have a podcast niche in storytelling. Now, if you’re talking about having a podcast just about your journey through life, that wouldn’t really work. Your journey is personal to you. I can pull all of these things out of my own journey, but you need to be able to transfer that to someone. We can never say that there isn’t a person out there that needs the journey, story, demographic, or miracle. Like we used the example of miracles earlier, let’s say you’re teaching about miracles, there is still a specific human being out there that would be listening. You have to have a person in your brain that you are transferring your teachings/stories/coaching to before you show up. Before I show up on my podcast every day, I visualize “Lola” and I’m talking to her right now. I know I can show up as I am with my hair a mess, my son in the other room, drinking my coffee because you’re my Lolas! I relate with you so well and you understand my journey and it resonates with you. However, if all I ever talked about was my journey, you all would leave because we are egocentric beings. I have to share my journey but then bring it into something that YOU can internalize with great takeaways and tactics that you can implement. Even if your topic was for an extremely broad audience, you still want to home in on your niche audience, your Lolas! Here’s the thing, my podcast is very niche, I’m talking to Lola, but do you guys know how many different types of people message me? I have men with no kids that will message me or people who aren’t Christian or faith based! People reach out to me because of the valuable content I’m putting out there, not because they perfectly align with my niche. However, you still have to have that person in your mind, or you won’t have the energy or the emotional transfer that gets people to really care about what you have to say and ultimately… come back for more! If you’re worried about appealing to every type of person out there, I would be filtering what I have to say and dilute my message. Once you start doing that, you’ve lost the power in your message. You have the power and permission slip to be micro niched!
